What is a recusant?
rec·u·sant
[rəˈkyo͞oz(ə)nt, ˈrekyəz(ə)nt]
NOUN
a person who refuses to submit to an authority or to comply with a regulation.
I do not create my work "the way that it's supposed to be done", which I feel is the antithesis of original art. What IS done correctly, is in making sure all paintings are quality, archival (built to last a lifetime) works. Always unique & original in producing my vision to share with the world & through time.
"I am going to keep it unpredictable & create my own style. That way, they don't know what's coming next & most of the time, neither do I."
Hello & thank you for your interest in whatever may have led you to Recusant Studios. My name is Kevin Hawley & I hope you find something thought provoking, beautiful, & interesting in my work. I take pride in not limiting myself to one subject, genre or style of painting. I have a wide array of influences and techniques & find inspiration everywhere around me. This always keeps my work unpredictable & interesting. This, gives you, my viewer, something to always look forward to. If you look close enough in some of my paintings, you may just find some surprises... who knows?
Let's take this journey together!

℧ All paintings are done in quality, colorful oil paints on canvas or wood panels. Please see descriptions of individual pieces of work, located in the 'GALLERY' for details of materials used.
℧ All paintings are protected with a Satin or Gloss varnish that will protect the original colors & brushstrokes for the life of the painting. Varnish seals the painting’s surface. Over time, pollution, moisture, dirt, & dust will change the appearance of a painting if left without varnish. Varnish also ensures UV protection & keeps the painting from damaging types of light.
℧ A little secret for those of you who have made it this far...
You will find a variety of subjects & styles of work to include landscapes, seascapes, animals & the natural world around us. However, you might also find some fan art, some paintings that literally created themselves & rarely, I'll go "dark" & try to hit the viewer with a shot of reality & something to think about.
Look closer & you'll possibly find more in the paintings...
So, keep your eyes open & happy hunting!!!
℧ "Some artists find inspiration in specific subjects, causes, 'genres' of artwork, methods of painting, or even simply a fascination of paint crashing together & creating new worlds...
I find inspiration in the infinite possibilities of not limiting myself into any one subject or way of doing things. ...leaving all doors open, so I can get out of the 'box'. I don't like labels, as they're restrictive to open, free thought. I will always strive to make it impossible to be given a label besides 'artist'. The unexpected, should be expected.
What I want to create, are pieces of work that put the viewer in a place that makes them stop & wonder where they might be, how it makes them feel, & see wonderful effects of light. After all, that is what I am doing here ~ manipulating light with materials & oil... for you to enjoy... or think about... or maybe even become inspired yourself."
I would love to hear your thoughts & which of my works, inspires you the most! Join me now and let me know!
